Staying Afloat in a Sea of Forgetfulness: Common Sense Caregiving Expanded Edition

When my father was first diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, I read everything I could find about the disease. I could immediately tell if it was written by a physician, a pharmaceutical company, or a nursing home. When caregivers are looking for help, the last thing they need is medical text so complex they forget what they’ve read as soon as they put it down. That’s what led me to write about common sense caregiving—first as a weekly column, and now as this book. My goal is to make this book as caregiver‑friendly as possible, sharing both my triumphs and hardships from more than three thousand days of walking alongside my father through Alzheimer’s and the world of memory impairment.

The Aftereffects of Caregiving

Throughout the many years you spend caring for your loved one, you may lose pieces of your own life that can take years to reclaim. You might come out of your caregiving journey wondering if any of the original “you” is still there. Is this you? Do you feel a little lost, fragile, or hesitant to move forward? This book was written specifically for you. We want to help you find yourself again—or gently reinvent who you are now. From personal experience, we know the aftereffects of caregiving can be overwhelming. Our hope is to help you open your front door, step back into the world, and remember that there is still life waiting for you.
